Peri-Oral Rejuvenation Doesn’t Have to Look “Fake”
Modern techniques utilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, along with other collagen
stimulating modalities, can restore lip volume, contours, and smooth surrounding skin
for a more youthful appearance.
The peri-oral region undergoes significant changes over time as a result of age-related collagen loss, sun damage, and repetitive muscle
action. The body of the upper and lower lip can lose volume, the surrounding skin may develop fine lines, and the corners of the mouth
can turn downward which leads to a “sad” or “displeased” expression. Fortunately, there are a variety of interventions which can
rejuvenate this region, restoring lost collagen and volume which leads to a softer, more youthful appearance. Even in more youthful lips,
dermal filler can be used to enhance natural contours to produce a plumper, more voluptuous contour.
Enhance volume, contours and smoothness with minimal downtime and a natural looking results
Several techniques are available to rejuvenate the peri-oral region depending on your individual needs. In most cases, there is minimal downtime and immediate improvement.
Dermal Filler
Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers designed especially for the lip are available which restore lost volume, move naturally with expression, and if needed can also be used to correct fine lines and downturned corners.
PDO smoothing threads
Tiny collagen stimulating threads can be introduced into the border of the lips and/or into the surrounding skin to stimulate new collagen. The threads dissolve over the course of about 3 months, but the collagen they stimulate can last for years.
Energy based treatments
There are many choices for collagen stimulating treatments in the perioral region- most commonly: Microneedling with or without platelet rich plasma (PRP), Microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivery for additional collagen stimulation (ex: Morpheus8), and micro-focused ultrasound (ex: Sofwave).
Let us help you choose the best filler and/or
rejuvenating procedure to meet your needs
With several options available, we understand it can be difficult to figure out which
procedure or combination of procedures might best suit you.
That is why we offer free customized consultations where we can make recommendations based on your particular needs, preferences and
goals for correction. Which procedures are recommended will depend on several factors including most notably:
- Your specific concerns - volume, fine lines, and/or changes in contour such as downturned corners
- How quickly you want or need to see correction develop
- Your past experience with fillers or other forms of intervention

Hyaluronic Acid Filler
Featuring:
Lip Volume: Revanesse Versa Lips Fine Lines: RHA Redensity
Mechanism
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers restore lost volume and can also be used to smooth fine lines, smooth the lip border, and change contours such as downturned corners
Onset, Expectations and
Duration of Effect
Correction is immediate
1 or 2 syringes may be required
Most clients will repeat dermal filler 1 to 2
times per year
Downtime
Temporary swelling- usually lasts 24 to 72 hours depending on extent of procedure
Bruising is more common with fine line correction
Technique
Platelet Rich Plasma, “limited area”- a targeted injection of PRP to the peri-oral region
Mechanism
Your own growth factors, obtained by isolating your platelets from a blood draw done just prior to procedure, which are then injected into the area where fine lines have formed.
Can be done alone or in combination with PDO.
Onset, Expectations and Duration of Effect
Correction develops gradually as collagen forms in the region which has been treated. It may take 3 weeks to begin to appreciate the improvement. It may take 3 months to see the full effect of the treatment.
Results are long lasting because you have formed new collagen, which can last years.
It may take more than 1 session to achieve your desired result (depends on how much collagen loss you are starting with and your individual biologic response to the treatment, among other factors.
Downtime
Temmporary swelling- usually lasts 24 to 72 hours depending on extent of procedure
Bruising may occur but usually resolves quickly.
Technique
Laser Resurfacing
Mechanism
A combination of exfoliation of older layers of skin as well as new collagen formation produced as the dermis heals from the therapeutic injury caused by the laser energy

Downtime
Temporary swelling, redness, and peeling
Special skin care may be required during the healing process
Avoidance of excessive sun exposure is required post procedure
Technique
Microneedling
With PRP=
“Vampire Facial”
With Radiofrequency energy (usually done as a full face treatment but can also be done regionally such as "Full Peri-Oral"):
Ex: MORPHEUS8
Mechanism
Microinjury is created with a medical microneedling device - resulting in new collagen formation during the healing process
Onset, Expectations and Duration of Effect

Downtime
Temporary swelling, redness, and peeling - usually less than is seen with laser skin resurfacing
Special skin care may be required during the healing process
Technique
Sofwave
Mechanism
Micro-focused ultrasound delivers heat into the deeper dermis, stimulating a healing cascade which results in the formation of new collagen and elastin.
Onset, Expectations and Duration of Effect

Technique
Botulinum toxin “Lip Flip”
Mechanism
Limited injection of a few units of botulinum toxin above and sometimes below the lip
Can be performed alone or in combination with dermal filler
Onset, Expectations and Duration of Effect
Onset of action within a few days
Reduces pursing of the lips temporarily and can result in a slightly more “plump” or “lifted” look to the lip
Does not eliminate all lip lines
May only last 6 weeks
Downtime

Questions?
We've Got You Covered!
- We offer free consultations to help you make the best decision base on your individual needs, your goals, and your tolerance for downtime. Correction of fine lines with dermal filler will have the inevitable effect of adding “some volume”. If we feel that this will look unnatural for you (i.e. ‘overfilled’) we will suggest you consider something like an energy-based procedure such as Sofwave or Morpheus8. If PRP is done, it is usually in combination with another procedure such as PDO smoothing threads, to further enhance the collagen response. It is not necessary to add PRP to energy-based procedures as they are already quite potent in their collagen and elastin producing effects.
Morpheus8 stimulates new collagen and elastin through two mechanisms- the microneedling itself and the heat delivered at the tips of the microneedles. This procedure will have some downtime- mainly redness and puffiness which can last for up to a handful of days.
Sofwave does not involve any needling or breaks in the skin surface, and thus has no downtime which certainly appeals to many clients.
Because Morpheus8 has dual mechanisms and because it also gives us the opportunity to add on the resurfacing tip, the effect/results from one Morpheus8 session can be more noticeable compared to one Sofwave session. If your fine lines/wrinkles are more deeply etched, it may make more sense to go with Morpheus8 as long as you are accepting of the additional healing time required.
These are BOTH award winning procedures and for good reason! You will see in the example before and after images that they are both be quite effective.
Both treatments usually require more than one session to achieve the desired result. Thereafter, a yearly maintenance session is suggested.
- Some people feel that pre-medicating with arnica tablets and/or bromelain tablets, beginning 1 day before or the morning of your injection and continuing for 2 days afterward, reduces the amount of swelling. These supplements are available OTC. We also have arnica available for purchase at Renew.
- You can also use topical arnica preparations during the healing process.
- Immediately post procedure you can apply an ice pack which we can provide.
- You may wish to avoid extremes of heat or vigorous exercise- they will not affect the dermal filler but might temporarily increase your swelling response.
- Again, premedicating with arnica and/or bromelain tablets can be helpful. Consider a product such as “BruiseMD” available for purchase on Amazon.com.
- Avoid aspiring containing products (even baby aspirin) for 3 to 4 weeks, and anti-inflammatory medications for 2 weeks pre-procedure (ex:ibuprofen/Motrin, Naprosyn/Aleve, naproxen/Anaprox).
- You can still have these procedures if you are on blood thinners, but your likelihood of bruising will be increased.
- Avoid nutritional supplements which increase bruising for at least 1 week (ex: fish oil, vitamin E, garlic, ginger, gingko, ginseng and turmeric)
There is no “best” dermal filler per se.
For fine line work around the mouth we highly recommend RHA Redensity! No other HA filler on the market performs as well in reducing the appearance of etched peri-oral lines.
For lip volume primarily we utilize Revanesse Versa Lips (a slightly larger 1.2 ml syringe compared to competitors). We will guide you based on your specific needs.
It depends. Makeup can be worn after dermal filler or a procedure such as Sofwave which does not disrupt the skin barrier.
After Morpheus8 we recommend waiting 24 hours, at which time you can use a post-treatment approved product such as Oxygenetix, available at Renew, for an additional few days. Once redness has resolved you can return to other makeup products.
Laser Skin Resurfacing will require a longer makeup-free period, likely 5 to 7 days and again beginning with Oxygenetix first until redness has resolved.
All of the listed procedures can be done even if the client has a tan. If you use self tanner it is recommended that this be allowed o fade away before doing a microneedling procedure such as Morpheus8.
We cannot treat through any area that has a sunburn.
For those with a history of cold sores we recommend and can prescribe for you a prophylactic anti0viral medication in order to prevent an outbreak that could otherwise be triggered by procedures performed in this area. The anti-viral can be taken “day of procedure”.
Disclaimer: Individual results will vary by person and are based upon patient variables (such as genetics, age and lifestyle), the severity of the condition before the procedure, the procedure(s) chosen, and compliance with any recommended aftercare program.
